Growing up in Detroit, Dawud Shabazz found himself surrounded by creativity and it had a great influence on him. At around age seven, he sketched a portrait of his mother. She was so proud that he knew at that moment,  that being an artist is what he wanted to do for the rest of his life.  He uses many different mediums – such as acrylic paints, glitter, enamel, sand and other textured elements. – and believes that working in a single medium is restrictive to his artistic process. “Each idea manifests a life of it’s own.”

African American artists such as Charles McGee, Judy Bowman, Ed Terrell, Richard Mayhew, and Kerry James Marshall have left the greatest impression upon him as an artist.

The Gift of Art Exhibition has been going exceedingly well, and we are grateful to everyone who has come out (and will still be able to come out) to see the show. Detroit raised painter Warren Wells is a griot of sorts.  He tries to capture individuals, history, and places in time.  A visual record so to speak.  At times, even imaginary places are represented.  Warren is grateful to the many friends and family members who have been a part of his journey…and is thankful for their love, patience and encouragement.  Warren is a graduate of Detroit’s Finney High School and San Diego State University.  After almost 40 years as an artist, he feels he still has a voice, and is grateful to God to be able to express it.

In this series Warren is looking at the deeper essence of our existence; the abstract nature of our being and of the planet.

Melissa Vize. New Beginnings Disguised as Painful Endings, 2018. 24″ x 36″ Digital photography on gallery-wrapped canvas. $397

Melissa Vize began serious photography in 2017, when she purchased her first digital single-lens reflex camera (DSLR). Prior to that, she was exploring all over the city of Detroit with her cell phone and documenting its landscape, architecture, culture, and the evidence of change.  Vize learned to master framing and that propelled her into a love of photography. With a focus on urban life, particularly in the City of Detroit, her most trusted city lens is the Canon 17-40mm L series. She considers herself fortunate to have captured Detroit between 2016 and 2019, during a low-pitched period of rapid transformation. Today, most of her photos are taken early in the morning when the city is quiet, as it used to be. Vize shoots low and likes to focus on depth of field and reflections. The resulting imagery reflects the way her brain operates: She finds, sees and understands the big picture first, then fill in the details later.

Born in Grand Rapids, MI, Scott McDuffee’s climb from factory worker  a Director of Corporate Transformation laid the foundation for his artistic practice.  Like many, he rediscovered his creative passion later in life; learning to trust “intuition and process” through an abstract art workshop he took in Detroit a few years ago. Inspired by years of corporate travel,  views from his window from one factory to another, various cultures, points-of-view, and flavors, as well as architecture, arts, and music, McDuffee brings the same climbing-the-ladder exuberance, experimental approach, and collaborative nature into Abstract Expressionism. The colors, textures, and gestures in his industrial and urban influenced canvases reveal his desire to figure out the rules just well enough to playfully break them. For McDuffee, being able to engage with people and utilize creative processes is hugely important, regardless of industry. As part of the Detroit Arts community through sharing his art, collecting other artists, mentoring and collaborating, his exploration as an Artist & Detroiter is just beginning.

Kirah Price is a young Detroit area artist into her sophomore year at The College for Creative Studies, majoring in Illustration. She has always enjoyed expressing herself and bringing her ideas to life while taking inspiration from nature, people, and personal experience. Through her art she brings together abstraction, afro-futurism, individual moments, and critical social and political concerns, often infused with vibrant  elements from the natural world. Kirah’s goal in life is to start her own business in art as well as run her own gallery, in attempt to connect with more artists and build community.

Ellen Kennary Doyle an artist from Michigan and Colorado.  After retiring early from a media career and raising three children,  she rediscovered her passion for art.  A friend convinced her to join a  painting workshop in suburban Detroit and she hasn’t looked back.   For several years now, she has been creating vibrant, colorful and sometimes whimsical works in acrylic and oil.  Her inspiration is nature, and she paints semi abstract  scenes from the Great Lakes to the Rocky Mountains.

Ellen’s work has been in several juried shows in the Midwest and sold in galleries in the Detroit area.. Her hope is that her paintings are as comforting and joyful for people  to view as they are for her to create.

Jonathan Harris is an emerging, visual artist who was born and raised in the city of Detroit. After attending The Detroit School for the Fine and Performing Arts, he attended Henry Ford Community College and Oakland University, where he majored in Graphic Design and minored in Studio Art. Working in acrylic paint, oil, pen and charcoal, he stretches the limits of his media by exploring and perfecting a range of styles in Fine Art. His work is emotive and focuses largely on current events, bringing awareness to world and social experience, and shining a light on the African American experience. Harris is currently serving an Artist Residency at the Irwin House Gallery which encompasses innovative arts programming that he is presenting and curating  in collaboration with the gallery, the development of new work and a Spring 2021 mural project, and culminates in a solo exhibition. His work is being vastly collected and has been presented during special programs at the Detroit Institute of Arts and in local galleries.

We know there’s a pandemic still raging, and we’re doing everything we can to keep our guests and ourselves safe. During this exhibit, we haven’t had  a problem at all with spacing visitors out. In fact, many guests – to their delight – have had the entire place to themselves! We do understand, however, that not everyone will feel safe to come out at this time. We also know that doesn’t mean that you don’t love (and want!) art. Please know that we’re doing everything we can to accommodate you and to create different avenues for experiencing art during these trying times — including making the show available to view and shop on-line.

Throughout this week, we will be adding the entire “Gift of Art” catalogue; more than 100 original works created by some of Detroit’s finest. This is an inter-generational and multi-cultural show, including almost every kind of art on every subject from the blissful beach to found objects, Detroit scenes, and Black Lives Matter. Again, this is also an affordable art exhibition, so everything in show is priced under $500.

The “Gift of Art” opening weekend was everything we hoped for, and more! People came out in comfortable trickles; the long hours made it easy to space visitors out and social-distance. We were safe, people enjoyed the art, AND took it home! Art collectors are amongst the happiest people on the planet, so it was exciting to see so many patrons leaving happy this weekend! Thanks to all who came out!
