Calloway’s “Cheap Wine & Chicken” comes to IHG

Painter and sculptural artist, Donald Calloway, has been essential in the Detroit arts community for nearly thirty years. Calloway recognized his passion for the arts at the tender age of three and has been solely dedicated to his artistic endeavors ever since. He honed the technical aspects of the arts at the Center for Creative Studies, then launched his practice at the Greektown Lofts, where his studio has famously remained.

Calloway’s wildly imaginative constructions often incorporate found and household objects that become nearly unrecognizable as human features, anatomy and accessories. His vivid use of color brings a sense of vitality and playfulness to the works, which are built upon a solid fine art foundation and powered by boundless invention. From oil paintings to sculptural wood and wire, the artist has developed several signature styles that are legendary and beloved throughout Detroit and beyond.

Donald Calloway’s work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions with such organizations as the Detroit Institute of Arts, Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, Arts Extended Gallery, Delta Sigma Theta, Liberal Arts Gallery, and National Conference of Artists Gallery. His awards include the Plowshares Theatre Company Sankofa Arts Award, as well as a Wright Museum residency. As the 2020, Ford One Challenge winner, Calloway developed “Building Bridges-Connecting Communities,” a Corktown mural on Michigan Ave.

Calloway’s “Cheap Wine & Chicken” is an annual art show, sale, and fête that has taken place on Noel Night for two decades at the artist’s loft. After a two-year hiatus, due to the pandemic, “Cheap Wine…” returned at a new location, the Irwin House ELL – a transitional art space owned and operated by Irwin House Gallery, located just three doors east of the gallery at 2363 W. Grand Blvd. The event drew nearly 400 guests over the course of the night.

The “Cheap Wine & Chicken” exhibition has been staged throughout the house and runs through January 3, 2023.

OPENS BLACK FRIDAY: The 3rd Annual “Gift of Art” Holiday Exhibition

Irwin House Gallery is proud to present the 3rd Annual “Gift of Art” Holiday Art Exhibition, opening on BLACK FRIDAY in an all-day Open House Reception. With more than 120 featured works and 60+ participating artists, this is the gallery’s largest, most inclusive, affordable, and joyous show of the year! Designed to encourage collectors and art-lovers to start or build their collections here AND give the gift of art for the holidays, the exhibition stands behind the hashtag #somethingforeveryone!

This year, Irwin House has been delighted and equally proud to work with Dr. Chanel Beebe as Curator of the exhibition. Born and raised in Detroit, Chanel is a creative writer, visual artist, educator, and founder and CEO of Beebe Arts LLC – a research and design firm focused on social and educational equity. Partnering with Irwin House for the first time, she shares,  “This is one of the most stunning shows I’ve had the pleasure of curating. The variety of art forms and styles takes me on such a beautiful journey and makes me so glad to be a part of Detroit’s vibrant art scene. I’m so excited to share these artists’ work with the city!”

The annual holiday exhibit typically features all original and affordable art, priced from $50-$500. From photography to ceramics and sculpture, to hanging installations and both traditional and experimental paintings, the 3rd Annual “Gift of Art” promises well over 100 dazzling, inspiring and mostly Detroit-made works, installed salon-style across both floors. Works were selected from an open call placed to artists of all ranks, backgrounds and styles via social platforms, with an intention to include every artist who applied. Due to the gallery’s growing profile, enhanced by Dr. Beebe’s fervent outreach, a record-breaking number of over 250 items were submitted for review this year. Consequently and regrettably, this will be the first year that the gallery was unable to accommodate each and every artist who submitted.

“This is an un-themed show, so this is the one time of year that we really try to bring everyone together – anyone who wants to exhibit, with whatever message they want to share through their art,” states Gallery Director, Misha McGlown. “We look forward to this show as it gives us an opportunity to meet and provide exposure for new artists and build upon the relationships with artists we already know. Plus, it feels good to know that this exhibit brings something for everyone – no matter your budget or what type of art you like!” Irwin House dreams of more space and future opportunities to work with some of the artists they were unable to fit into the show this year.

The 3rd Annual “Gift of Art” Holiday Exhibition opens on Black Friday, November 25, 2022 in an all-day Open House Reception from 12 -7 pm. The show runs through December 23, 2022 and general hours of operation are Weds-Sat 12-7 pm and Sundays 12-6 pm. #GiftOfArt22 #artfortheholidays #somethingforeveryone

Artist & Collectors Open House Weekend

On Saturday, September 3, 2022, Irwin House Gallery opened PRODIGY –a group exhibition observing ten flourishing emerging artists who stand as representation of and hope for the future of art. Anchored by a lush, immersive installation constructed by “community-engaged” artist Halima Afi Cassells, the exhibition highlights the work of eight locals along with one artist whose work was vetted and procured from Africa, Rotimi Godwin, and a West Coast pyrography artist, Marlon Ivory, who served as a mentor to featured Detroiter, Terrell Anglin. Each of the artists brings their own strengths and lived experiences to the exhibit, resulting in a cohesive spread that has been described simply as “breathtaking.”

This weekend September 10-11, 2022, Irwin House Gallery invites guests back for Artists & Collectors – an Open House afternoon offering an intimate experience with the PRODIGY art and artists. The event takes place from 2:00 – 6:00 pm both days and is free to attend, no reservation required. “We are, of course, proud of all the artists we’ve worked with and all of the work we’ve done here,” describes Irwin gallerist and curator, Misha McGlown, adding “but this is our most powerful show yet.”

PRODIGY features new work by some of Metro Detroit’s most exciting emerging talent including Loralee Grace, a Western Michigan transplant whose landscape oils are infused with wonder and insights from her extensive world travels. Quadre Curry reveals new sculptural work that builds on his sold-out solo exhibition at the gallery earlier this spring, and Marlo Broughton’s graphic sensibilities are at play in a dreamscape series that pushes the imagination into the stratosphere. Emerging artists Kaleigh Blevins, Erik Smith and Nonnie Williams are also sharing fresh figurative and abstract expressions in this exhibit, while Marlon Ivory is showing in Detroit for the first time, upon the invitation of his protégé, Terrell Anglin, who continues to challenge the boundaries of wood-burning since debuting at Irwin House in the TRIPTYCH exhibit last year. Rotimi Godwin, who was introduced by gallery friend and collector, Sandra Halladay, is making his U.S. debut from Nigeria, Africa. His portraits – imaginative, sensitive, and unapologetic – heighten the local conversation and connect seamlessly with Grace’s global re-imaginings, Cassell’s interactive installation and Broughton’s star-lit compositions on the gallery’s first floor. During the exhibit, biographical videos are being rolled out on each artist via the Irwin House YouTube channel and on social media, and an on-line catalog and virtual tour will also be published on Friday, September 9, 2022.

In addition to the upcoming Open House, the gallery will host a collaborative conversation with Cassells and her installation, Enjoy the Game, on Saturday, September 24, 2022, followed by a Family Art Day on Sunday, September 25, 2022. With programming to take place throughout the exhibit, additional artist talk dates are TBA, along with a Closing Reception to be held on the eve of the exhibition’s end, Friday, October 14, 2022.

Artists & Collectors Open House takes place Saturday and Sunday, September 10-11, 2022 from 2:00 – 6:00 pm. The PRODIGY exhibition runs through October 15, 2022. Exhibition hours of operation are 12:00 pm – 7:00 pm Thurs-Sat and 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm on Sunday; by appointment other days/times.

PRODIGY: A group exhibit celebrating the future of art

Irwin House Gallery presents  PRODIGY, a group exhibition observing ten flourishing emerging artists who stand as representation of and hope for the future of art. Of each, the exhibition asks for their genuine lived and historical inspections, as well as surreal and time-forward musings in both conventional and alternative media. The exhibition brings together creators of varying backgrounds, invites fresh voices to Detroit’s robust arts scene, and encourages participating artists to explore and continue pushing the boundaries of art.

Artists often carry the seed of invention from the start – some expressing creativity from conception and others ignited by their environs. An artistic voice is cured over time and the most courageous commit to bearing their personal truths, realities and fears, through their work, for a living and a lifetime. This exhibition recognizes these young professionals in forging their creative paths and celebrates how far they have come, as well as how much further they promise to go.

“Making a decision to commit yourself to your art is a bold choice that is often unpopular and fraught with interruptions,“ states Gallery Director, Misha McGlown. “On a day-to-day, even minute-to-minute basis, there are any number of things to knock an artist off their game, so any young person who’s committed themselves to art as a way of life, we want to recognize that, celebrate their milestones along the way and encourage them, however we can, to stay the course. They are the future of art.”

PRODIGY features new work by some of Metro Detroit’s most exciting emerging talent including Terrell Anglin, who has continued to expand on his mixed media pyrography practice since debuting at Irwin House Gallery last year, and Loralee Grace, a Western Michigan transplant whose landscape oils are infused with wonder and insights from her extensive world travels. Quadre Curry reveals new, sculptural work that builds on his sold-out solo exhibition at the gallery earlier this spring, and Halima Afi Cassells, an award-winning interdisciplinary community-engaged artist, contributes a site-specific installation that challenges viewers to contemplate our current global economic systems.  Local artists Kaleigh Blevins, Marlo Broughton, Erik Smith and Nonnie Williams are also sharing new work in this exhibit along with Marlon Ivory, a West Coast pyrography and mixed media artist brought in by Terrell Anglin and showing in Detroit for the first time. Additionally, Rotimi Godwin was introduced by gallery friend and collector, Sandra Halladay, and his works will be making their U.S. debut from Nigeria, Africa. Throughout the exhibit, biographical videos will be rolled out on each artist via the gallery’s YouTube channel and on social media. An on-line catalog will also be published for remote viewers.

PRODIGY opens on Saturday, September 3, 2022 from 5:00 pm – 10:00 pm and runs through October 15, 2022. Exhibition hours of operation are 12:00 pm – 7:00 pm Weds-Sat and 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm on Sunday; by appointment other days/times.
